Dr. Schaefer is a board certified orthodontist. A board certified orthodontist is an orthodontist who has voluntarily gone through hundreds of additional hours of preparation to demonstrate their judgment, skills and knowledge required for providing the highest level of patient care. They have achieved board certification through the American Board of Orthodontics, the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the American Association of Orthodontists.
An orthodontist is a dentist who has not only completed a graduate program in dentistry to receive their DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), but has also gone through a competitive residency at a CODA-accredited orthodontic program for an additional 2-3 years to be trained specifically in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
Achieving board certification is the last step in a long and intensive educational experience to ultimately provide excellent patient care.

Dr. Schaefer learned attention to detail during his 12 months working at Disney World. Disney orders manhole covers with the mouse icon on them. They ensure trash cans are no more than 30 steps away from any guest. The queues at Disney are part of the entertainment. The gold trim in the park is done with real gold leaf, not paint. Attention to detail lets your guest know they are worth the effort, and that’s how we see our patients: as guests.
Dr. Schaefer believes attention to detail, like orthodontics, is an art. At Beam, we embrace the details. We take time to understand what is important to our patients, and we are determined to deliver that without compromise. Details take time, and that is precisely why all our patients receive at least 30 minutes per appointment. While many of your appointments will take less than 30 minutes, we do that to ensure high level treatment is delivered at every visit. From the braces we bond to your teeth to the coffee we serve in the waiting area, Dr. Schaefer has personally evaluated numerous options before making a decision on what is used at Beam.

Dr. Schaefer and his family are residents of Encinitas. We believe we can provide better care by living close to the office, and it is something we hope is reflected In every patient experience at Beam. If you have an ortho emergency, Dr. Schaefer can be at the office in a few minutes to relieve your discomfort or repair a broken bracket. Living in the community we serve improves the attention to detail that we feel is so important during your orthodontic adventure. He is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to address any questions or concerns you may encounter throughout treatment.
We are members of Cardiff 101 Main Street, who’s aim is to enhance the well-being of our community. We sponsor a Cardiff soccer league team and an Encinitas Little League team (Go Indians!). We sponsored this year’s Encinitas Egg Hunt and are beginning to support our local schools. If you have a sponsorship need, please reach out to Dr. Schaefer. He and his family made it a priority to work with as many local professionals as possible during the creation of Beam Orthodontics. Our logo was designed in Solana Beach. Our t-shirts and hats were printed in Carlsbad. We serve coffee from local Cardiff roaster P.J. Ortega of Leap Coffee. Our flyers were designed in San Diego. Our live edge wood finishes were selected at Made Lumber in San Diego. We will continue to seek out businesses that call San Diego home to help us run our office.
We Make Orthodontics Fun
Dr. Schaefer is a funny, quirky guy. He wants you to have fun as you progress through orthodontic treatment, and our office is designed in part to have just that: fun. As you walk-in, you will be greeted by fresh backed chocolate chip cookies and an old-school record player. We have comfortable booth seating and tables that make you feel you are at Better Buzz, not a dental office. We offer portable video games for kids and 2 large tv screens for all our patients to watch as they sit in the treatment chair. Dr. Schaefer will do his best to be his kooky self and make you laugh, and we will top it off with a lot of rewards for proper brushing and contests throughout the year.
Comfortable Treatments and Current Techniques
Dr. Schaefer is continually on the forefront of new techniques to ensure that his patients are treated as comfortably and efficiently as possible. These new technologies produce better results with fewer visits and shortened treatment times. In some cases, we can eliminate months of treatment time. In recent years, there have been exciting advances in cosmetic treatments, and Dr. Schaefer has eagerly embraced these innovations. Our office offers clear braces, lingual braces (INBRACE®), Invisalign®, Invisalign teen® and other cosmetic options for patients that desire an understated orthodontic appliance appearance. Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen® use clear, plastic aligners created from sophisticated 3-D computer imaging technology. They are comfortable, removable and invisible! Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen® are popular choices for adults and teenagers who are ultimately concerned about the appearance of braces during normal daily activities. Our office is certified to treat patients with Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen®, and welcomes questions regarding Invisalign® as an option for you or your child.
Flexible Payments / Hours
At Beam, we not only accept most PPO plans, but we will determine your insurance coverage and file it for you. After that, we are happy to create a monthly payment plan that fits your budget. Dr. Schaefer has a math minor, so he loves playing with numbers. We strive to make treatment affordable for you and your family. We also offer discounts to patients who pay in full at the start of treatment. We are in network with the following dental benefits plans:
